Penance

Prayers for the Sacrament of Penance

Examination of Conscience.  Here are simple and detailed guides to a thorough examination of conscience in preparation for the Sacrament of Penance. As a remote preparation for Confession, we should also examine our conscience each evening by asking ourselves these three questions: What did I do right today?  What did I do wrong today?  What can I do better tomorrow? Finally, here are two questions to ask yourself in regard to the receiving the Eucharist: Since I will be receiving Holy Communion at Sunday Mass, how can I best live my life this week to prepare myself for this Great Sacrament?  Since I have just worthily received Holy Communion at Sunday Mass, how can I best use the graces of this Great Sacrament to lead a life worthy of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this week?

Prayer before Confession. “Forgive me my sins, O Lord, forgive me my sins: the sins of my youth, the sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body, my idle sins, my serious voluntary sins, the sins I know, the sins I do not know, the sins I have concealed so long, and which are now hidden from my memory. I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. I know my sins have wounded your tender heart, O my Savior. Let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most bitter passion of my Redeemer. O my Jesus, forgive and forget what I have been. Help me become more fully what you lovingly want me to be. Amen.” – “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Rite of Penance.  Here are helpful guides for children and for adults to use when they go to Confession.  The priest will also be happy to help you make a good Confession if you just ask him.  Throughout your day, remember to recite the Jesus Prayer, the prayer of the heart: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”  After Confession, remember to fulfill your assigned penance and to seek further spiritual healing in your daily life through God’s abundant Mercy.

Prayer after Confession. “May the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the saints, whatever good I do and suffering I endure, heal my sins, help me to grow in holiness, and reward me with eternal life. Amen.” – “I love you, Jesus, my love. I repent of ever having offended you.  Never let me separate myself from you again.  Grant that I may love you always, and then do with me as you will. Amen.”

The Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus. That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Jesus, grant me: knowledge and love of my nothingness, the continuous memory of my sins, awareness of my selfishness, the abhorrence of all vanity, the pure intention of serving God, perfect submission to the Will of the Father, a true spirit of compunction, blind obedience to my superiors, holy hatred of all envy and jealousy, promptness in forgiving offenses, prudence in keeping silent about others’ matters, peace and charity toward everyone, an ardent desire for contempt and humiliations, the yearning to be treated like Thee, and the grace of knowing how to accept it in a holy way.

Holy Mary, Queen, Mother, and Teacher of the humble, pray for me. Saint Joseph, protector and model of the humble, pray for me. Saint Michael, the Archangel, who was the first to bring down the arrogant, pray for me. All Saints, sanctified by the spirit of humility, pray for me.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, though being God, Thou didst humble Thyself even unto death, and death on the Cross, in order to be a constant example for us to confound our pride and self-love. Grant us the grace to imitate Thine example, so that by humbling ourselves as befits our wretchedness here on earth, we may be exalted and enjoy Thee in heaven forever.  Amen.
